I LOVE family traditions!

You too?!

Traditions are unique to each family; they allow us to grow together and strengthen our special bond.

Each year, I find my family scaling back on presents, and focusing our intentions more on each other and creating memories. Instead of the candy-filled advent calendar this year, my Mom found an advent calendar with tiny drawers to fill with ideas! I thought, what an excellent way to celebrate Christmas spirit, begin some new family traditions, and focus on appreciating each other.

In the spirit of giving, here are my “30 Advent Calendar Family Activities” along with a user guide!

FIND OR MAKE AN ADVENT CALENDAR: There are many different kinds of Advent Calendars available. Our Advent Calendar came from Homesense, and will serve us for many years to come! In past years my Mother-in-Law has made calendars using a large tote with a lid, and inside, 24 gifts tied to numbered strings. This worked great!

CREATE A LIST OF IDEAS: I have put together a list of activities that are well-suited for my young family. Find my 30 Advent Activities below! Yes, you only need 24, but it’s handy to have a few extras just in case plans change.

BOOK YOUR PERSONAL CALENDAR: Take a look at your schedule and do your best to organize activities on days that work best. You can always move activities around to suit your agenda best.

SHOP FOR SUPPLIES: Put together a “supply list” for any of the activities you have planned and then go shopping. Here are some of the supplies that are on my list this year:

  • Hot Chocolate Mix (Cocoa, Milk & Honey)
  • Gingerbread House Kit
  • Shoebox & toys
  • Red & Green finger paints
  • Candy Canes

CHOOSE A TIME: Choose a time of day for your family to open their calendar. We open ours in the morning and discover what we get to do.  It sets an exciting tone for the entire day!

WARNING!  Now I know you are THRILLED to give this Advent Calendar a try! What better way to get your family together and enjoy this holiday season. But please make sure that each activity is simple enough to fit into your busy life, and not become a “chore.”  Have fun with it, create some new traditions, and most of all, enjoy these special moments with your family!
